Electric Motor Efficiency
NovaTorque motors are the first competitively-priced small motors to provide operating efficiencies of well over 90%. Their efficiency advantage will be maintained over the life of the motor, because it is inherent in the patented NovaTorque design.
Widespread adoption of NovaTorque’s super-efficient motors would result
in over $100B energy savings per year worldwide. Besides helping consumers’
wallets, NovaTorque motors could reduce the carbon footprint of virtually
all households and businesses, resulting in a total reduction of over 1
billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Electric motors are made with many internal configurations – each having tradeoffs. The most common type of motor sold today is the AC induction motor, which is generally cheaper to manufacture and doesn’t require drive electronics. But, induction motors operate efficiently only in a narrow range of torques and speeds. Because operating loads vary, actual operating efficiencies of induction motors are typically only 50-70%. For example, a typical fan might have an induction motor that is 65% efficient at high speed, but is far less efficient at the fan’s medium and low speed settings.
Permanent Magnet (PM) motors are the other common type of motor found in products today, and offer more power per size and higher efficiency than induction motors. Their primary drawbacks are that they are more expensive and they require an electronic drive module.
NovaTorque motors actually provide even higher efficiency and more power per size than other PM motors, but can be built for much less. Because they use standard drive electronics, they are an obvious choice for almost any application where conventional PM motors are now used. And, in applications where their greater power density, higher efficiency, or smaller size offers advantages, they are an attractive alternative to induction motors.
