MEAD Software

NovaTorque’s Motor Efficiency Analysis and Design (MEAD) software has been developed by NovaTorque to compute and display motor performance and efficiency over the entire operating range of the motor.  MEAD takes basic motor input data -- such as torque constant (Kt), phase-to-phase resistance(R), motor thermal resistance(Rth), no load speed losses, and losses with torque -- and then computes the total motor loss at any specified torque and speed. MEAD computes the current required to develop the required torque, then computes the estimated losses, and iteratively solves for motor temperature and true motor loss.

Secondary adjustments for magnet type, including degradation of magnet strength with temperature and the roll-off of Kt with magnetic material saturation at high currents, can also be applied. Using the MEAD software, a three dimensional plot can be obtained for any of the important parameters of the motor, including efficiency, motor temperature, output power, total or individual loss components and even operating cost. MEAD has proven to be an extremely valuable tool to NovaTorque in developing better motors by allowing the design engineer to see exactly how changes in design affect motor performance without needing to test the motor at all operating points.
